IDC’s LCA Calculator, helping companies to comply with legislation for product life cycle and design for the environment.

IDC’s LCA Calculator has featured in August’s version of ‘Medical Plastic News’ in an article entitled: ‘Designing for the IEC 60601: CO2 Emission Data Mandatory.’

The article discusses how IDC’s LCA Calculator, an intuitive product life cycle assessment tool, can help medical companies reduce the CO2 impact of their products and comply with the IEC60601 directive.

To demonstrate the tool our team took a generic plastic case and compared the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of a selection of polymer materials; Polypropylene, Polycarbonate, ABS and compared them with virgin Aluminium. The results showed that Aluminium had the highest CO2 impact of all the plastics, an interesting analysis for readers of Medical Plastic News.

Although this research does not, by any means, make use of the vast capabilities of the LCA Calculator, it is useful to show how even the most mundane materials can influence CO2 emissions. By using the LCA Calculator to identify high impact materials and processes, companies will have taken the necessary steps to ensure the CO2 impact of their product is reduced.
